The Precision Advantage: How Wire EDM is Revolutionizing Machining

Discover how wire EDM machining delivers ultra-precise results for complex parts at North State Machine. Learn about our capabilities and advantages.

Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) is transforming the manufacturing landscape for high-precision components. At North State Machine, we use advanced Mitsubishi EDM systems to cut intricate geometries with tolerances as tight as ±0.0001". What sets wire EDM apart from traditional machining is its ability to erode material with electrical discharges rather than physical contact. This contactless process results in less stress on the material, reducing deformation and eliminating the need for secondary finishing in many cases.

Wire EDM is particularly advantageous for producing small, detailed features and cutting hard metals that would wear down traditional tools quickly. Whether we’re machining aerospace alloys or tool steels, this technology enables our team to meet the high demands of industries that can’t compromise on accuracy. Additionally, wire EDM allows us to take on projects involving complex internal cavities and sharp corners that would be impossible to achieve using standard tooling methods.

At North State Machine, we continue to invest in EDM technology and skilled operators to meet our customers’ toughest challenges. Our climate-controlled machining environment and commitment to ISO 9001 standards ensure repeatability, precision, and quality in every part.

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining is the foundation of modern manufacturing, enabling precise, repeatable, and efficient production of complex components. At North State Machine, our CNC capabilities include vertical and horizontal milling, turning, and multi-axis machining using Haas and KIWA machines. Tight tolerances—often ±0.0002"—are critical in industries like aerospace and defense where even the smallest deviation can result in performance issues or part failure. Achieving this level of precision requires not only advanced equipment but also skilled machinists, rigorous quality control protocols, and a deep understanding of material behavior. Our engineers work closely with clients to optimize part geometry for manufacturability. We also employ in-process inspections and post-machining measurements using CMMs (Coordinate Measuring Machines) to ensure that every component meets the desired specifications. With short lead times, flexible production schedules, and a customer-first philosophy, we consistently deliver parts that perform under pressure.
